These Union folks have been stealing for years not only from their own organizations but also from the USPS. This is probably going on all over the country. Prosecute these folks to fullest extent of the law. Make an example for everyone to see.
This should not come as a suprise. Finally got caught. Union stewards in our office have been stealing for years. They do less work and find ways to get out of work. In their years of service at out office they have stolen more than $400,000 in wages and benefits by being unproductive pieces of $hit.
Can't wait until you guys are sentenced. We have quarters waiting for both of you. By the way you will not be working in the mail room or with finances.

It's time to bust the Unions. They have been stealing for years. Not only from members but from their local offices. They do less work and find new ways to ge out of work. We have to carry the extra load daily while they sit in the offices and file baseless grievances. We work out in the cold and heat while they stay comfortable inside. They ain't the only ones. The former president of our local along with his officers destroyed records and union equipment not to mention stealing. They were all drug addicts and were elected only cause the membership didn't have a clue and still don't.

If its going on all the time where are the trustees'? But I'm glad we have the unions because in Nov. when the contracts are up we have someone to negotiate something. ENRON all over again. If all unions were investigated, there would be a lot of union officials going to prison. They have been stealing time from the Postal Service and money from the union members. What a shame. We don't need unions any longer because we have federal laws to protect us now.

This is the tip of the iceberg.As more members become apathetic and others drop out this kind of thing will happen. Even if you can't make it to the meeting you are entitled to a copy of the financial report from the Treasurer. It's your money they are spending. You vote in the officers. Those of you who aren't even members don't even get to vote for them. Then scum like this get in with ulterior motives. They are the criminals who seize an opportunity.
We need the union and more people to step up to the plate and do the jobs who are honest and hard working and most union reps are. It just takes a few to ruin it for everyone else.
Federal laws will not protect you. When it comes time to negotiate the contract- pay attention this time. They want to take your benefits away and they can do it if you continue to be apathetic., and wasting time fighting with eachother.
The maximum fines they have to pay are just a bit more than they stole. With interest after all of these years they made out anyway.
I keep repeating myself, I know, but when you are a union member you have to know the contract, too and the Constitution of your local. Why would you blindly just be a follower or let someone have total control of all of that $$? You can say I pay my dues for them to do their job and that is true, but there is a level of involvement for the member, too just to be informed and paying attention. Know your rights. How can you know if your rights are being violated? It isn't always something the steward will know about unless you say something. How will they know if they had you come in early and didn't pay you out of schedule if you don't say something?

North Jersey's problems are not over. It appears new officers are no better than the old.
In August of last year, The Dept of Labor sued Local #190 over its December 2004 election.
"The Office of Labor Management Standards (OLMS) filed a complaint against APWU Local 190 seeking new elections of union officers supervised by OLMS. The complaint alleges that the union allowed discriminatory access to its membership list; provided incorrect ballot return instructions; refused to count mail ballots received in accordance with ballot instructions; allowed a union officer to use union resources for campaign purposes; applied moneys of an employer to promote the candidacy of an incumbent and his slate; and allowed confidential union resources to be used for campaign purposes. The lawsuit follows an investigation by the OLMS New York District Office."
National APWU should have ruled in favor of members on this one-- but as usual they let members deal with REPUBLICAN appointed agencies to resolve problems.
Back to McGovern, he sued DOL over its failure to investigate his complaints arising from APWU's 2001 National election of officers .
He also sued National APWU under section 201 of LMRDA (I think it was 2003).

1. I GET TO listen to 99 whiners and complainers just to get to one clerk with a legit problem.

Steve in PA- you are right on target, but we both know that being a Steward is a thankless job. These guys just prove it by wasting time fighting between themselves just like they do at work. Isn't it odd how they just ignore when you get someone's job back- with back pay- save someone's butt from removal or discipline which would take their paycheck. I have personally in my 9 years as a steward been thanked about 3 times. One guy got $60,000 in back pay and didn't even have the courtesy to even let us know when he got his check. We DO follow up on settlements.
But when the Postal Inspectors have got their backs against the wall, even the NON-MEMBERS cry for a Shop Steward. I have lost count of those who have joined while they were going to arbitration. They had no idea what a Steward even did until then. They have no idea how hard it is to get union time to even write a grievance. Most of us end up doing it on our own time and grieving it later because of time limits.

Local 190 members should bring internal charges against Trustees (including Local's Executive Board) if charges against former officers hold up. Trustees should have caught most of the discrepanices in financial documents of the local.
This is why members need to be more involved into inter-workings of unions. Members are the highest ranking body of any union. However, very few members attend union meetings .....much less "follow the money" and utilize their power.

Have you not read any of the other posts or seen what goes on around you? or maybe you are the one writing them. You do not have to be dangerous to sense danger.You just have to be aware of your surroundings. The fact that I am a Shop Steward means I have seen and heard just about everything. You are obviously a manager in denial. Any Shop Steward with any experience at all has seen the ramifications of Postal Management's bullying and intimidation tactics. The fact that you haven't been the recipient of it doesn't mean your time won't come. Even if you are a manager, you are not immune.
My comments are not negative but realistic. You are hiding your head in the sand if you think everything at work is fine and dandy. People get sick,injured,have family emergencies. We are not robots. We are people; at least I am and most of the people I work with. There are some at work who honestly scare others with some of their comments and outbursts- especially managers I have witnessed going off so loud you can hear them behind closed doors. We have had ambulances called for people who have had anxiety attacks. Get real!

As a season veteran carrier I have seen many folks come and go. In my office if you are regular in attendance and productive our management is great to work for. Our 2 laziest workers are our union stewards. They work the slowest and are always causing division between employees and management. They give the NALC a black eye. These sorry stewards would be fired if they worked in the private sector. But they hide behind the union for protection. Just my 2cents.

Burrus suspended McGovern, the Local's VP and another officer and placed the local in trusteeship in October 2002 . Weightman was voted out of office in 2002.
The "alleged" charges are much worse than reported in the news.
Another tidbit: The officers refused to allow trustees to examine local's financial documents.
National APWU did everything right in an effort to protect monies of the local.

Yes, former Western Region Coordinator Raydell Moore was appointed by President Burrus to oversee Local #190 in 2002. Jim Burke, APWU Eastern Regional Coordinator replaced Moore as trustee in 2004, according to court documents.
This may open up an investigation on all unions.

What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Why is it that the minute that a person is arrested and charged with a crime that people begin building a gallos before the trial even begins? A couple of hundred years ago this type of attitude caused people to revolt against their government. All of the energy that is being directed towards expressing anger and hate needs to be focused on protecting our rights, including criminal, civil and labor before they are taken from us.

That's the problem too many people assume becoming a non-union member is the best solution, but its not.
Consider this...less than 30% of members vote--even on a contract concerning wages and benefits; less then 20% of members attend local union meetings; less than 5% of members attend national union conventions.
In summary...most members don't care what happens in the union.
Besides APWU offers a great disability plan to its members.
Just raise the dues! Somebody will need to pay these guys while in JAIL. An extra $20 per pay per employee should cover it and union admin costs.

Oh yeah, if they're guilty, they must be punished. Have been a steward for 10 years now and will tell you, it is VERY IMPORTANT for the members to go to union meetings. Those dues paying members who say, I ain't got time to go to the union meeting, be aware, your money could be getting stolen or otherwise used to the detriment of the membership. Attend and make them accountable. Don't attend and you git what you git.
Financial reports are read at every Union meeting. If you are not there, you can not question an expense with the vague title of " miscellaneous expenses, supplies, whatever". People with criminal minds know this and take advantage to rip people off.
They always ask" any questions?" after a report is made.The report has to be seconded to be accepted. Then you can say " what miscellaneous expenses?" What for?" "I want a copy of the financial report". I want to see the receipts" I know we are all busy but it is our money.
Those of you who aren't members can complain and make remarks but put your money where your mouth is and stop leeching off the membership!
Your steward may or may not be doing the job you think they should be doing, but they are not involved in the financial side of things. That is the Treasurer- an official elected by the membership. they also have no control over decisions made at National or what other locals are doing.
Meetings at the most are once a month. If you can't go, at least request a copy of the minutes.They should be posted on the union bulletin board anyway.Many locals have newsletters.
FYI- most Stewards don't get paid a salary- some get their dues reimbursed every other month. Many work on their own time . It is not a lucrative position by any means. Very few attend conventions as each union is only allowed a certain amount. As far as Super-seniority- I was an IOD when I became a steward- so much for that theory. L@@K- I am a woman. Retired1- I am a Christian- so what? 283, Label 200- you are all non-members or management- whatever- who cares? Some people have integrity and morals, some don't.
Those arrested in NJ haven't been unions reps for 4 years.

As a loyal union member I hope if these two are guilty that they never see the light of day again. I would advise all union members to ensure a "checks and balances" is in place in order to monitor your union's finances. Someone who withdraws the money and someone who deposits the money. Also, Trustees to monitor everything is a good idea. You should check your local constitution and make necessary constitutional amendments if necessary. (My local passed a DOL inspection last year with flying colors.)

However as one of the previous posters stated less than 30% of members vote--even on a contract concerning wages and benefits; less then 20% of members attend local union meetings; less than 5% of members attend national union conventions.
So given these figures a sort of incentive exists for union leaders to steal from the lemmings don't you think. They all deserve it!
After reading all the posts here from union members I defenitely will never join a union as long as I live and neither will about 20 other people that hired in with me! Someone tell me why anyone should associate themselves with this?

The PO would love to hire all casuals, but because of the Union, there is a negotiated CAP on the number of casuals they can use.
Just a few reasons to be a member of your respective Union.
There are a LOT of good Union people out there, just as there are some that are not so good. There are also a lot of good non-Union members out there and some that are not so good. Point being, there are good and bad in every group.
Be one of the good guys and pay your fair share and THEN BE ACTIVE AND INVOLVED so good is done in your Local.
