Texas seems to be a much better political climate. On Tuesday the Sunland Park City Council voted to deny a “right-of-entry” permit requested by the United States Border Patrol to station National Guard troops at Mt. Cristo Rey for “military operations”. Mt. Cristo Rey has a long history as a place of refuge, pilgrimage, and religious importance in the border communities of West Texas and Southern New Mexico.
Testimony provided to the Sunland Park City Council by members of the Border Network for Human Rights and the community members of Southern New Mexico expressed concern regarding the placement of military troops on a site of peaceful refuge and sanctuary.

Manito, the sad fact is that to a certain sector, they are not human beings, nor am I, nor are you.
I think sometimes that because of a combination of factors, your life so far has been blessedly without some of the kinds of experiences that some of us, especially older folks, older "non-white" folks, to be precise, have known quite a bit of.
And please do not think I am saying, oh you are so young, you do not know this or that. Nanette has shared some of her experiences with us, and I would say to her also, I bet I have had more than you, simply because I have lived more years, and in an even older time.
I know you like bright sides, and this is one that you can actually put in your box of them. There has been improvement.
A man of color in the US in 1930, for example, who wished to eat lunch, rent an apartment, purchase a piece of land, an automobile, or even a pair of shoes would have a very different sort of experience than would his descendant in 1980.
And depending on where and when, your own experience might be very different from that of the descendant.
It is very unfair, but for many reasons, in some ways, today's young adults, depending on where they are, etc. will find that sometimes they seem to have slipped back in time, that things happen to them that sound like Gramps's "you youngsters don't appreciate the sacrifice and struggle, lemme tellya when I was your age here's how bad it was" rants.
And I recognize that this may speak to me more than to you.
On the one hand, I think, how wonderful that there are any young adults *anywhere* who have reached that adulthood with such a minimum of those experiences, but at the same time it pains me to have to say to you, to anybody, that the people you write about who say these things say them because we are in fact, not human to them, and this is a reality I am sure your parents will join me in wishing you would never have to know.

What does the bible tell us about immigration. Well it appears that this Southern Baptist Convention Resolution that Jesus is more compassionate than some hardliners seem to believe.
Make your own decision?

I believe that the bible enjoins Christians to be kind to the stranger among them, I have been pleased to see the quote and verse on t-shirts worn by people demonstrating for human rights, and the Koran says essentially the same thing, that God made the different tribes that we might know each other.

elRanchero - thanks for that info on Mt. Cristo Rey, wasn't aware of it. Hearing the Director of the Border Network of Human Rights speak tonight was very heartening. It's good to know there is some grassroots work being done to promote the dignity of the area that is longstanding.
Ductape - the truth is not always bright, as much as we would like it, but I'm optimistic that some concrete things are being done to make a brighter future.
a4l - thanks for that link to the SBC's resolution...I think.

You don't see anti-minute man "ammo" when you read it? The last four or five quotes of the resolutions should be memorized and unleashed when confronted with a "god-fearing, anti-immigrant bashing christian", who is hiding behing the bible to spew hate.
Anyway when is the last time you saw Ducttape use a smile face?

Good point about the smiley face
There is ammo there, I guess I'm alittle battle weary from seeing so much pro-enforcement language everwhere. It is good though that they mentioned the caring for others as mandated by the gospel message.
