The walls are hung with velvet that is black and soft as sin,
And little dwarves creep of them and little dwarves creep in...

Did you laugh at parts of the movie that were not intended to be funny? I did that frequently during The DaVinci Code. That was the only time I've had someone threaten me with physical violence in a movie theater . . .

Evan, did you reverse your adjectives on purpose?

No. I thought it was very aesthetically pleasing if inaccurate.

It was visually...interesting, but I have to admit a basic knowledge of Catholic liturgy would have made the Philip II scenes much cooler. I mean, think of a requiem mass at the escorial...

Wow, your comments nearly exactly mirror my own thoughts watching this execrable "film". I would add that any and all scenes featuring a horse were hilarious: Bess and Walt charging through verdant meadows while laughing gaily (faugh!); that panicked white stallion leaping (in slow motion, natch) off the decks of the ailing Spanish vessel.
And did anyone else burst out laughing at the incredible cheesiness of that scene were Walt waxes poetic about the glories of the New World, while the music slowly swells in the background? And then the music stops when he's interrupted by that courtier, whom Elizabeth crossly dispatches? And then the music picks up right where it left off? I nearly died. Luckily the theatre was pretty empty and the closest couple to us were sharing in my mirth....

And at Tilbury, why was it that Liz's horse just couldn't frigging keep still--very distracting. And they didn't even use the whole "heart and stomach of a king" gag, either. (Or is it "heart and stomach of a concrete elephant"? I can never remember.)

FYI, in homage to Philip, I have decided to travel everywhere with a random entourage of cardinals. Photographic evidence:

I recall several years ago in a movie so stupid I wish I did not remember seeing it - The Saint - (my sister picked it out, honest) the "bad guy" was a Russian dictator/president whatever, and in all the scenes where he was in public, he was being followed around by (apparently) the Patriarch of Moscow in full vestments.
You know, because that is what Patriarchs of Moscow do... in the movies.
I had once considered making a website detailing all the wierd idosyncracies and errors made in moveis when it comes to depicting religions. My favorite of all time - the title of it now completely escapes me - is a movie where a Southern-style revival evangelist is depcited in a film wearing essentiall Roman vestments... for no reason whatsoever.
Expecting Hollywood to get ANYTHING right about the Catholic Church ever... well, don't ever count on it. Be pleasantly suprised the two times a day that broken clock is right.
